Fraud is a serious matter. If you've been a victim of fraud or have concerns of suspicious activity related to your John Hancock account, contact us immediately so that we can take appropriate action.

Online fraud is the means by which a criminal uses the internet to trick victims into sending money or giving out personal information in order to access money or use your identity to gain other financial advantages such as insurance coverage or employment or government-sponsored benefits.

Actions You Can Take to Keep Your Personal Information Secure

  • Beware of suspicious calls, emails, and regular mail. Do not wire funds from accounts held in your name to unknown third parties under unexpected lottery or prize winning notifications via phone calls, email, or regular mail.
  • Always use a secure website to send personal or financial information. Look for a padlock before the web address in your browser and ensure that the address starts with "https://" rather than "http://."
  • Log into your personal financial accounts and change your passwords on a regular basis. Monitor your recent login activity, account changes, and other pertinent information and report to us any suspicious activity regarding your John Hancock account.
  • Install anti-virus and anti-spyware software. This software helps prevent malware from being downloaded to your computer and blocks you from visiting a known fraudulent site.
  • Review your credit report several times a year. Look for and report any unauthorized activity to the credit bureau in question.
  • Never email any sensitive information, including your account number, date of birth or Social Security number. If you need to convey private information, call.
  • Visit OnGuardOnline for more tips on how to keep your personal information secure. The Federal Trade Commission's site offers free online security tips and resources.

Signs of a Phishing Email

  • Requests your personal information and threatens to close your account without it. We will never do this. Call us prior to providing personal information to rectify a problem with your account.
  • You weren't expecting it. You should know why you are receiving an email from John Hancock, e.g. responding to your email or notifying you of transaction confirmations and statement and prospectus availability. If you are unsure of the email's origin or did not conduct activity to prompt the notification (account changes, trades, etc.), give us a call.
  • The sender email adddress doesn't look right. Expand the sender email address. It is most likely fraudulent if it does not mention or misspells the purported company's name. The "FROM" field of the email can be "spoofed," or altered to appear like it is from a legitimate sender.
  • The email content doesn't look right. It is most likely fraudulent if the message contains spelling errors or broken English.
